237 YEARS OF OUR ENDERS FAMILY IN AMERICA

The Enders Pavillion, Enders, PA   Of course there will be an Enders Family Reunion is 2001!  It will be the 79th Reunion as well as the 237th year since the arrival of our family immigrants, Captain Philip Christian and Anna. (Degan) Enders to America in 1764.

EVERYONE is invited, in fact encouraged, to attend this extraordinary event.  Come early, bring your family and plan to stay for the whole day.  There will be plenty of good, inexpensive food available in the dining area.  In the early evening, a Blue Grass band will entertain from 5-8 PM.  Other features will be enjoyed by all who attend.  We'll give you more detail in the Spring "Enders Connection".

The Memorial Service which precedes the Annual business meeting will remember those family members who have died since the last reunion.  Please send any and all information of such to the secretary, Dr. Pottieger, or one of the Historians, Marilyn Wilbert, Marilyn Henninger, or Karl Schaeffer.

Place the date on your calendar now and plan to attend with every member of your family.

A FEW NOTES FROM
 GENE C. ENDERS (1-7-5-3-2-4-4)
PRESIDENT

Veteran's Day!  Thanks to the veterans who gave so much for us to enjoy these freedoms.  In light of the USS Cole incident, where we lost 17 of our US Navy personnel, it just shows how fragile our freedoms are.  Take time to thank our men and women in uniform when you pass them along the way for helping to defend these freedoms.
Thanks to the editors of the Enders Civil War Book, which will be going to the publisher soon and will be on sale at the 2001 Enders Reunion in August.  Karl Schaeffer and Russ Ottens will be on hand to autograph each copy sold.  More is said elsewhere in this issue.
The past 2 years have been, to say the least, very trying times in my life.  So I want to thank all in the Enders family Association for doing such a good job to help me and my family through these trials.
I am very sorry to report we will be curtailing rentals of the grove in the 2001 season  The past years I have had this office I have pleaded for people to get involved.  Thanks to you who did step forward.  To those of you who are asking, "What are they doing to my grove?" The answer is simple.  The time has come to stop complaining and get yourself physically involved.  To quote Mary A. Enders, a past secretary, "Critics are plentiful, but helpers are few."  If you want to see the grove rented, it is time to get busy and do your part.  This is not MY grove as some
will say, it belongs to the membership of the Enders Family Association.  If you are not a member, become one, if you do not help in any way, get involved.  The spring meeting of the Enders Family Association will be held in the Halifax High School Library, May 24, 2001, members welcome.  You may even get on a committee!  So come and GET INVOLVED instead of spreading untruths.  The job of Association officers are always open every year at the Reunion.  Throw your hat in the ring, and make it a real election.  Any questions or comments can be addressed to me.
Last month Bill Wilbert had an accident in the grove.  Thanks to the man above, he sent a good Samaritan, Bruce Harner, who came to his rescue.  He found Bill pinned by a tree he was removing.  Like so many of the old trees, they are hollow and it snapped off up high, kicked back coming down, pinning him and breaking his left arm.  Bill is recuperating after having 2 metal plates and 14 screws put in his arm, but getting farther behind in his own affairs.  We need a committee of volunteers, in the future to work together on projects.  These trees being hollow, are "accidents waiting to happen."
Mark your calendars now for SPRING CLEANUP, APRIL 28, 2001. Hope to see you at the 20001 Reunion, August 11, 2001.
Hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season.  BEST WISHES TO ALL!
                    Gene C. Enders (1-7-5-3-2-4-4)

Captain Enders' Legion

THE CIVIL WAR SERVICE OF
THE DESCENDANTS OF
PHILIP CHRISTIAN ENDERS

After four years of research, your family members and co-authors, Russell J. Ottens (1-7-5-10-11-3-2) and Karl F. Schaeffer (1-14-3-3-1-7-1) have completed a legacy of 162 family members who fought for the North and the South in our country's most brutal and devastating war.
This publication will be submitted to our publisher in early 2001.  An individual "Profile" clearly describes the horrors of war that they experienced.  Their life is chronicled from their birth to their death, in detail, that is meaningful, poignant and compassionate.  Twenty of our family perished from wounds and disease, and many others were wounded and survived.
On August 11, 2001, "Captain Enders' Legion" will officially be offered for sale at our 79th Enders Family Reunion in our historic grove in Ender, PA.  The cost of the book will be $35.00, WITH ALL PROFITS GOING TO OUR FAMILY ASSOCIATION.  If you are unable to attend, there will be a modest shipping and handling charge for your book or books.
Your authors will be available to sign each book that is purchased on "Reunion Day"!  We hope to see all of you in Enders on August 11, 2001
.
Please check our Civil War section of our website for more information on this historic family publication.

This could be the Enders Cabin thought to have been built near the Enders Cemetery, Enders, PA.Is This the Enders Cabin?

PHOTO DOCUMENTS
ORIGINAL SIRE OF
OUR IMMIGRANT'S CABIN

Bobbi Jo (Crunk) Wiseman (1-7-1-7-1-2-2-1) of Henderson, TN shared several interesting Enders pictures with the Association.  This one is the most exciting, as it appears to our Historians that this could very well be the original cabin built and lived in by our Immigrant and his family, Capt. Philip Christian Enders.
Standing in front of it are Carson, George, and Clint Enders, according to Bobbi.
     Study
the picture, those of you have been up on the Enders cemetery hill where Capt. Enders, his wife Appolonia and several children are buried.  Can't you feel the rise of ground on which the cabin seems to have been built?  History states that the first members of the Enders Family were buried "not far from the cabin door" (.viii, Vol. I, The Enders Genealogy 1740-1959).
Look around your house for old Enders photos and share them with our historians!

Board Meeting

ASSOCIATION MEETINGS
ARE FAR FROM DULL!

Fourteen persons attended the Fall meeting and after a busy evening of discussions and actions President Gene's wife, Nancy Enders and Karl Schaeffer's wife, Rosemary Schaeffer brought our the cake and beverages to celebrate the birthdays of Historians, Marilyn Wilbert and Karl Schaeffer.  But serious business was discussed and the following actions were taken:

1. Plans were laid for the 79th Annual Reunion scheduled for August 11, 2001.  We hope to have back the Blue Grass band which will play from 5-8 PM.  More time will be allowed for socializing by the adults and games will be enjoyed by the children following the memorial service and the business meeting.

2.  Final plans were heard from Karl Schaeffer, one of the two authors of "Captain Enders' Legion", about the mid-2001 publication of the 450+ page book of the Enders Family in the Civil War.  More...

3.  Memorial tree planting have been temporarily discontinued in the wake of more vandalism in the Grove after fledging trees were destroyed by vans at night.  Meanwhile, the memorial tree funds are being kept separate by our treasurer.

4.  Our supply of Vol. I of the Enders Genealogy is dwindling.  Those wishing to purchase one, as well as one of our other publications, are urged to ACT NOW!

5.  A new office of Assistant Treasurer has been added by virtue of action taken at the 2000 Reunion.  A person will be named during the 2000-01 year.

6.  Agreed regrettably to not rent the Grove to outside groups in 2001.  There are not enough helpers to prepare and clean up after each group.  In addition, groups generally do not volunteer to help to do this in order to save costs and reduce the Enders Family Association's work load.  This action is only for 2001.  Reconsideration might be made in 2002 to allow Grove rental if provisions can be made to alleviate the burdens noted above.

7.  Present was Trustee Bill Wilbert despite the injuries he sustained in the Grove in an unfortunate freak accident.  Through the miraculous discovery of Bill (who was working alone in the Grove) by Bruce Harner, who happened to come to his rescue in a timely fashion.  Bill was whisked off to the doctor and later the hospital.  He is wearing uncomfortable braces and a sling along with metal plates and screws in his shoulder and elbow.  But he came to the meeting with Marilyn Wilbert, his faithful wife, and "nurse" to give his reports.
